Abstract
The rate of positive immunohistochemical staining of estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor nd correlation between receptor status and nuclear grading were studied in 45 breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomy at Chung-Ang Unversity
Hospital.
The patients consisted of 34 cases of infiltrating ductal carcinoma, 6 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ, 3 cases of mucinous carcinoma and 2 case of infiltrating lobular carcinoma. The method of immunochemical staining was immunoperoxidase
technique
labelled with avidinbiotin complex. The nuclear grade were divided by the method of Black.
Of the 45 patients, 19 cases showed positive reaction for estrogen receptor antibody and 11 cases showed synchronous positive reaction for estrogen and progesterone receptor antibodies. The rate of positive reaction of estrogen and progesterone
receptor
in infiltrating ductal carcinoma was higher than that of other types of breast cancer. A significant correlation was found between nuclear grade and both estrogen and progesterone receptor status. The high nuclear grade tumors were more often
both
receptor positive than were low nuclear grade tumors.
The estrogen and progensterone receptor status related to nuclear grade of tumor indicating that estrogen receptor and progestrone receptor status represents another index of histopathologic differentiation.
